In collaboration with Dave Dombrow and Kevin Fallon of SpeedHack, select students of the Sports Product Design program were tasked with reimagining a sports footwear icon. Working with UO student, Bryant Jimenez, we hacked the iconic adidas Copa Mundial.
Worn by players such as Zinedine Zidane and Diego Maradona, we designed for a modern athlete to sport our new boots.

Project
Brief
How could we reduce the internal temperature of football footwear when playing on hot artificial grass and asphalt?
1
Weight Reduction
-
Replace or remove excess materials to bring the current weight down (326 grams)
-
Remove heavy soleplate and swap for a lightweight alternative
-
Disassemble and reconstruct boot with upper alterations
2
Flexibility
-
Update soleplate with a modern conical stud variant
-
Minimize material on the medial and lateral edges
-
Reduce upper layers for enhanced ball feel and first touch
3
Breathability
-
Zone areas for maximum breathability
-
Add storytelling elements throughout through permeability
-
Perforate high-sweat areas while maintaining structural integrity
